Stone Bridge

T

There was once a stone bridge, that crossed the Bearkill. Sadly, it has gone. Today, a newer more recent bridge takes its place. The stone bridges of years gone by were amazing examples of the stone-mason’s skill and ingenuity. Two still stand in the town of Durham.

The village of Conesville was known as Stone Bridge.  Sadly the bridge was washed away in 1874 during floods.

The stone bridges were a means of traversing larger streams, along the turnpike. Prior to the stone bridge’s existence, the road ran along the Manorkill Creek.

During 1836, when the town was being formed it was renamed the ‘Conesville Center’. Nowadays the word ‘Center’ has completely disappeared.

The site of the former Stone Bridge. A more modern bridge stands in place.
